Can Facebook Advertising Work For You?

Greetings.

Have you ever wondered whether or not to advertise on Facebook?  Quite apart from catching up with family and friends, Facebook advertising can be a cost effective way to pull in lots of traffic… if you’re in the right niche.

When you’re on Facebook, you’ve probably noticed the ads that appear on the side of the page. These are Facebook Ads and they’re paid ads from Facebook users. This is an advertising method that lots of people use to get traffic, fans, Likes and sales, and it can work for you too.

Why Facebook Ads Are So Effective

The really great thing about Facebook Ads is that they let you choose a highly targeted demographic. You can choose who sees the ad by age, gender, interests, location, education level, income level, and absolutely anything else people put on their profiles. This is huge – it’s way more targeted than either Google AdWords or Yahoo Ads, plus you get walked through the entire process.

Another advantage over those advertising methods is that your Facebook Ad comes with an image. It can be your logo, something eye-catching, or just a smiling face. This makes your ads much more visually appealing and they’re more likely to stand out.

Facebook Ads are very useful when you want to get a quick burst of traffic. For example, if you’ve just started a fan page and you’d like to get some activity going there, Facebook Ads can get you fans fast. You can set your own daily advertising limit and, once your page is up and running, you can then cancel the ad campaign.

Some factors to considder:

Before you sign up for your Facebook Ads campaign (and more importantly, fork over the money), there are a few things you should consider.

First of all, certain niches perform better with Facebook Ads than others. Some are hot and some are not. The gaming, tech, and dating niches are all huge on Facebook, while health niches generally don’t do so well. Don’t take it for granted that just because your niche is big, it’ll also be big on Facebook.

To make your ads work, you need to be able to write compelling copy. Social media is a bit different than direct mail or other types of copywriting. In general, people aren’t on Facebook to buy. They’re there to hang out, connect with others, and be entertained. Your ad has to appeal to this audience. You can learn how to write good copy by looking at popular ads to get ideas.

You also have to make sure that they’re going to like what they see after they click the link and come to your page. In other words, the ad should be relevant and target the right people, and your page’s content has to deliver what it promises.

Before You Get Started…

Before you start your Facebook Ads campaign, make sure that you have a clear objective for it in mind. What do you want people to do when they hit your fan page? If you have this clear in your mind and focus your efforts on it, your Facebook Ads will achieve their objective and pay off big-time.

Feel free to pop along to a couple of my pages – and don’t forget to ‘Like’ lol!

10 Words Every Successful Blogger Needs to Know

Greetings.

This guest post is by Tony Hastings of The Top 10 Blog, taken from problogger.net:

Whether you are blogging for profit, publicity, or pleasure, the basic building blocks of success are the same.

Success can be defined as, “accomplishing an aim or purpose or having achieved popularity, profit, or distinction.” (Google Dictionary)

Here are ten essential words you should consider constantly as a blogger, as they reflect the values you need in order to succeed.

1. Purpose

A purpose is “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.” (Google Dictionary)

So why do you blog or want to start a blog? Your motive should determine the style of your blog, your style of writing, the frequency of your posts, and the subject matter of your posts. It’s important that you establish your purpose from the outset and make sure that your design and content fit that purpose.

The theme, layout, amount of advertising and type of content will all flow from your purpose, and they’ll set the tone that you desire. That doesn’t mean that you need to take it all too seriously if you are blogging just for fun, but it does mean that you shouldn’t dominate your pages with ads if your aim isn’t to make money blogging.

If you are operating in a niche, your purpose will be fairly clear and your content sharply focused. If, however, like me, you started to blog without any firm aims, then you might find that you need to be more flexible and allow your purpose to evolve and mature.

I started out aiming to collate Top 10 posts on all sorts of subjects, but now I focus on social media, especially blogging and Twitter. You don’t need to be too rigid—follow your instincts and go with the flow if you feel that could be the best way for you to discover your purpose.

2. Quality

Quality is “the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something.” (Google Dictionary)

Good-quality content is the foundation of all great blogs. That’s easy to say, but how do you measure quality, and how do you ensure that your content achieves the desired standard?

That is a very subjective question but I would say that a post should be able to inform, educate, amuse, or entertain. Any one of these is a basic requirement, more than one is desirable, and all four is blogging heaven!

Your content should be original—too often we can visit a blog which appears to have some killer content but which, on closer examination, is a copy of or an excerpt from something previously posted elsewhere.

Don’t just focus on content quality, but on presentation quality too. Poor spelling and grammar can ruin the best posts. Always check and proofread your content to make sure it’s as good as possible. Be proud of what you do and make sure it embodies the best quality in all respects.

3. Patience

Patience is “an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay.” (Dictionary.com)

This is essential in blogging! It can take some considerable time for your blog to be noticed, or for changes you have made to show results. Sometimes you can make changes such as SEO improvements, new sharing options, or different ad types and become frustrated when you don’t see results overnight.

It takes time for changes to take effect, particularly with search engine results and rankings, so be prepared to let things run for a while before you judge the results.

Too many changes in a short space of time can annoy regular visitors too, so try to be a tortoise and not a hare: allow good time to see the benefits of all the positive changes you make to your blog.

4. Determination

Determination is “a resolute movement towards some object or end.” (Dictionary.com)

Surely you don’t need to be determined to run a blog? Well, if you are trying to make money from your blog, or are using it as part of your social media strategy for a business, you most certainly do. It needs to be kept up to date and monitored to see how it’s performing, and that takes time and commitment.

But even if you are blogging just for the fun of it, you still need to be determined to keep it going in the long run. There are so many distractions in “real” life. I know from my own experience that sometimes blogging can seem to be a bit of a chore, and the blog can take a back seat as life takes over.

But you need to be determined to log in again to start writing and constructing that next post, as a neglected blog will soon begin to whither on the vine.

5. Confidence

Confidence is “belief in oneself and one’s powers or abilities.” (Dictionary.com)

Self-confidence is a quality that is generally required to succeed in all areas of life—and blogging is no different. Just to put yourself out there in the first place takes courage and self-belief, and even the most experienced blogger may sometimes feel self doubt as their finger hovers over the Publish button.

Every blogger starts from the same place, and the key to building that confidence is, in the first place, to take that initial step to get started, and then to learn and develop from there.

You may not consider yourself to be the best writer or very technically minded, but by looking at what other bloggers do, soaking up the best of the amazing resources that are out there, and trying out new things to stretch yourself, your confidence will grow.

However, you must be prepared to fail and to learn from the inevitable mistakes that you will make. The blogger who hasn’t made a mistake yet may feel confident, but that confidence may be misplaced and will lead to an almighty fall when disaster strikes.

A better way to develop as a confident blogger is to take risks, be prepared to fail, and learn from the experience when it happens.

6. Integrity

Integrity is “adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.” (Dictionary.com)

I like a blog post with a bit of spice in it as much as the next person, but as bloggers we need to know where the boundaries, both moral and ethical, lie—and to act accordingly. What is considered to be offensive material is in many ways “in the eye of the beholder,” however the blogger should be wary of springing surprises on their readers.

For instance, a visitor to an erotic literature review site might know what to expect but if they come across explicit material on a web design blog they might be somewhat surprised. Similarly I see bloggers use offensive language and get away with it, but most would agree that it needs to be used sparingly and in the right context to be acceptable.

Do you have adverts or affiliate links on your blog? If so do you make it clear that you might be earning from these and do you ensure that you are not advertising products and services that most of your readers wouldn’t approve of? To preserve our reputation as bloggers it’s vital to make sure you make the appropriate disclosures and to ensure that you are happy with your ads and promotions.

We all hate to see our work copied elsewhere or images used without permission, so don’t do it to others. Again, we should all try to maintain good standards and do something about plagiarism when it does happen.

We all, as bloggers, have a responsibility to act with integrity and honesty to maintain our reputations. If we don’t, then we are unlikely to be successful.

7. Communication

The definition of communication is “to give or interchange thoughts, feelings, information.” (Dictionary.com)

This is one of the most important words for a blogger. Sharing, networking, commenting, reacting to comments, and connecting and interacting with others are vital ingredients of the blogging experience.

There are two aspects to this. The first relates to your own blog and the second to your own actions. A successful blogger must make sure that it’s easy for their readers to comment on and to share their posts. There is endless (often conflicting) advice out there about the best way to achieve this, so do your research, experiment, and find out what works best for you.

Get out there into the big, wide online world too. Connect with others on whichever platforms work for you. But don’t just use this as a way to make yourself known—promote other people too. Share great content from other bloggers, comment on their work, and interact with them. Doing that well not only means that you have a better chance of blogging success, but that your experience will be enriched, and b,logging will just be more fun.

8. Personality

Character is “the essential character of a person.” (Dictionary.com)

A great quality of any successful blogger is that they allow their personality to shine through all that they do. Don’t hide behind a logo—take a peek out and show your face.

Tell the world a little about yourself and add your image to your About page, and people will relate to you as a real person rather than as a corporate or anonymous entity. Let your own personality show in your writing and the things you write about.

People relate to real people, so showing your personality to the world will be of benefit when you do get out and about connecting and interacting on your chosen social (and real-world) networks.

9. Consistency

Consistency refers to the “steadfast adherence to the same principles, course, form, etc.” (Dictionary.com)

In my early blogging days, I tended to make quite a few changes to the design and format of my blog as I found my feet and decided what worked best for me. I progressed from a Blogger blog to a free WordPress theme, and then through two premium themes until I finally settled on my blog’s present layout.

My guess would be that it didn’t matter too much initially, as I had very few visitors, but it’s important, as your blog grows, to create consistency so that your readers are comfortable visiting your place and know, to a degree, what to expect from you.

I’m not just talking about consistency in design and layout, but also consistency in content and post frequency. You don’t need to be posting all hours of the day, but try to achieve a consistent style and frequency of posts so that people get used to seeing you around.

Consistency of topic is a little harder but still very important if you are blogging in a niche. I have always had posts on all sorts of subjects, from blogging and social media to chess and Halloween games, so readers are used to that. However if you blog about cookery, for instance, and suddenly a post on car maintenance appears, your readers might wonder what you are up to.

10. Flexibility

Flexibility is “characterized by a ready capability to adapt to new, different, or changing requirements.” (Merriam-Webster.com)

Since I just sung the praises of being consistent and patient, flexibility may seem a strange word to include, however the ability to be flexible is vital for the successful blogger. It’s all about recognising when something isn’t working and having the courage to make changes to try to improve what you are doing to meet your aims.

The social media world is changing and developing around your blog, so you need to be willing to be flexible—prepared, for example, to make changes to your sharing options, or to integrate a new development that would benefit you and your readers.

The key, though, is to try to maintain that consistency by not making too many changes at once, and being patient enough to allow the changes to take effect. Those three key words of flexibility, consistency and patience are most definitely interlinked. You need to keep them all in mind.

What do you think are the key words a successful blogger needs to focus on? Have I included any you don’t think are important? Are there others I have left out? Let me know in the comments.

3 Ways a Facebook Fan page can Increase Your Popularity

Greetings.

In these social media savvy times, it is important that online marketers are actually visible online!  One very effective way of ensuring this is to set up and/or enhance your Facebook fan page or pages.

I will be sharing a few tips on how to do this effectively in my next few blog posts, starting with this one:-

If you are responsible for marketing your business, then you absolutely must extend your efforts into the world of social media.  And if you are marketing through social media, you absolutely must create a Facebook fan page.  Facebook fan pages are different from regular member profile pages in a number of ways, and are the perfect way to increase awareness about your business and its offerings.  If you are still on the fence about Facebook and what it can do for your business, then you owe the fan page interface some serious consideration.  Here are three ways in which a Facebook fan page can increase your popularity:

Friends list limitations versus likes.  Facebook profile pages allow for only five thousand friends.  When you do get friend requests, you have to take the time to either approve or deny them.  Now, five thousand may sound like a lot of friends, but not when you are a business competing with businesses that have hundreds of thousands of customers and counting.  When you convert to a Facebook fan page, your “friends list” changes in a couple of ways: first off, the five thousand limit is lifted, and second off, you no longer have to approve new friends.  People simply hit the “like” button at the top of your page and they are automatically subscribed . . . which means everyone on their friends lists sees this activity in the news feed.

Advertisements.  Once you have a business fan page set up, you can take advantage of Facebook advertisements.  Facebook allows you to customize your ads to target whichever audience you choose.  Facebook ads are proven to be highly effective, and can be a great tool in your bag of marketing tricks.

Customized applications.  One awesome thing you can do with a Facebook fan page is create custom apps (or hire an app developer to do so) that allow your page visitors to perform a multitude of tasks right from the Facebook interface.  The options include selling your products directly from your fan page, and allowing page visitors to opt in to other offers linked to your business.  When you employ the use of apps, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

As you can see, you really cannot afford to be missing out on the myriad opportunities offered by a Facebook fan page.  And the best part is that it is FREE to set up a fan page.  For help designing an effective fan page for your business, connect with me on Facebook!

15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business Page

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you will be aware that Facebook is rolling out the new timeline changes on 30th March.

I came across this brilliant article by Pam Moore of Social Media today and thought I would share it with you here.   It is clear and concise and deals very positively with the changes and how to prepare for them.  Enjoy!
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Posted March 24, 2012 with 11347 reads

Yup, Facebook did it to us again. This time they have added the new timeline to business pages. With it come both good and bad changes.  As I wrote in this earlier post “ Quit Blaming Facebook and Fix Your Own Marketing Problems” it’s important you don’t waste too much time complaining. Instead use that same negative energy and turn it into a positive. Use it as a lesson for not putting all of your social eggs in one basket!

The best thing you can do is stop complaining and get to work. The new Facebook business page timeline is here to stay at least until they decide to make the next round of changes. Might as well get use to it and make the most of it!

Below are some must know tips as well as loads of Facebook reference urls at the bottom to hopefully save you some time in case you get stuck or have further questions.

Note, there are more changes than what I included in this blog post. For this post I tried to keep it specifically focused on the “need to know” changes.

facebook5121 300x300 15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business Page

15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business Page

1. Know the dates.

The new Facebook timeline is set to launch on all business pages March 30, 2012.  You can start playing with your new page now and see it in preview mode before actually pushing live. I encourage you to do this as soon as possible. Don’t wait until the last minute and then be stuck with a boring page that shows you were not prepared.

2. Create a new Facebook timeline cover image.

The cover image provides amazing opportunities for branding and to visually inspire and connect with your fans. The options are endless as long as you stay within the Facebook guidelines outlined in #3 below.

Create several different timeline covers so you can provide a fresh and inspiration experience for your timeline visitors!

Image dimensions: 851 x 315

Download a free template I created in both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator formatshere.

pmncover 300x143 15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business Page

smart kid small 218x300 15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business Page3. Know the Facebook cover image content guidelines (rules).

Facebook has set pretty strict guidelines for what can and can’t be displayed and communicated on the new timeline cover image.

What you CAN do:

  • Brand the heck out of your company, book or personal brand. This include brand images, logos, photos and any other visual marks.
  • Inspire your audience with visually appealing graphics, colors and images.
  • Use simple language that will help you inspire and connect with your fans.

What you can NOT do: (Per Facebook cover guidelines)

  • Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”
  • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section
  • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
  • Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”

Basically the cover image is provided to inspire and connect with your fans. It is not meant for blatant self promotion or hard sales.

*Obviously make sure you have legal copyrights to all images and content.

4. No default landing tabs.

You can no longer set a tab as a default landing tab. Now before you go off on a wild rant about how terrible this is, remember this is a post designed to help you move forward and do good things with your new Facebook timeline.  Got it? Okay, great! Now here are a few things you CAN do:

  • Maximize use and space of cover image.
  • Use the unique urls of apps to direct people directly to the app from pages outside of Facebook as well as posts, status updates within Facebook.
  • Maximize use of the top apps shown underneath your cover photo.
  • Use the apps for call to actions and to engage your fans.
  • Use this as an excuse to get out of your box and focus on truly inspiring and connecting with your audience

5. Tabs are now Apps!

Apps are the new tabs. Although you can’t set one as a default landing tab for new visitors to your Facebook page, there are still many ways you can leverage apps.

  • 4 apps are always on display underneath your Facebook cover image.
  •  You can utilize a max of 14 custom apps on your timeline.
  • Create a custom thumbnail for your app. (see #7 below)
  • Apps have a unique url that can be used to drive traffic to a specific app (see #6 below).

iStock 000012552769XSmall1 300x225 15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business Page
6.  Use a unique url in place of landing tabs.

Although you can no longer set a default landing tab, you can still easily get around this.  Since each app has it’s own unique url you can use the unique url to direct traffic from inside or outside of traffic to a specific app.

I suggest purchasing a unique url that you can use to drive traffic to your Facebook app of choice.  For example, I purchased the domain www.pamsfanpage.com and use to use it to direct traffic directly to my default landing tab. Now I will use it to drive traffic to an app of my choice.  The best part of using a domain that you own is that no matter how many times Facebook changes the apps, tabs, timelines, pages or other, you can stick to one or two urls that you use on a regular basis.

7. Create custom thumbnails for apps.

It is super easy to create a custom thumbnail image for each and every app. Note custom images can not be set for photos and likes.

a. Create an image that is 111  x  74 pixels.

b. Click on the arrow to the right of your timeline (underneath the cover image). It will show a number which represents the number of apps you are using.

c. Click on the arrow next to the image of the app you want to change.

d. Click on edit settings.

e. Click on change (for the image)

f. Upload the new image

iStock 000011571924XSmall3 300x300 15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business Page8. Fans can now send you a private message.

You can not message your fans. The messsages are user (fan) initiated.  Messages are a good way to encourage one to one communication if you have an interest in doing such with your fans.

9. Milestones

You can set milestones for your business for current, or past dates. This is a great way to highlight key events such as grand opening, ribbon cuttings, launch of new products, new partnerships, business milestones and achievements.  Milestone images are 843 x 403 pixels.

a. Click Milesone in the sharing bar at the top of your page

b. Add a headline, date, location and details

c. Choose to add a photo

d. Click Save

10. Highlighted Posts.

You can set any post to be highlighted which means it will take up both sides of the page. I know, the name “highlight” just doesn’t make sense to me either. I expected to see some type of real highlight. This feature enables you to bring special attention to a particular post within the timeline.

11. Pinned Posts.

You can set a post to be pinned to the top of the page. Pinned posts will stay on top of your timeline for up to 7 days.If possible, try not to wait the full 7 days before you change out the post unless you have a very important message to share. Chances are you have repeat visitors coming to your page throughout the week. Give them something new and fresh to check out.

iStock 000014250706XSmall1 300x225 15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business Page12. Like button and interest lists.

The like button will now show as “liked” for all fans who have already liked the page.

There are also new interest lists that can be accessed with a simple hover of the like / liked button.  You can create your own list as well as subscribe to lists the page owner has created.

Users can also select if they want to see your posts in their timeline right from your Facebook timeline by hovering over the same like button.

I will do more research on these feature and provide further detail in a subsequent post.

13. Know the required image sizes.

iStock 000016860317XSmall 300x225 15 Must Know Tips to Rock Your New Facebook Timeline Business PageNo need to over complicate this. Note the required image sizes and jot them down on a sticky. Stick it to your computer monitor and you won’t have to look them up or worry about forgetting them.

  • Cover photo: 851 x 315
  • Profile picture: 180 x 180
  • Thumbnail image for apps: 111 x 74
  • Highlighted & milestone images: 843 x 403
  • Images within wall posts display as 404 x 404.

14. It’s what happens after the “like” that matters most.

Don’t get too hung up on all these changes. If you are focusing on only “likes” then you have much bigger problems than the Facebook default tab going away.

As I always say, it is what happens after the like that matters most. Check out this post I wrote in December, 2010 which still stands true today for tips to engage your audience after the like!  “What Happens After the Facebook Like? 20 Tips to Engage Your Audience After the Like!

15.  Don’t freak out.

The worst thing you can do is go into “freak out” mode. If you are completely freaked out over these changes then you really need to do the “double think” on your online marketing strategy. Remember, you do not own Facebook. Facebook can make any changes they see fit, whenever they decide to do so. It is a free platform and although you may have put too much weight into the platform for the success of your business, use the anxiety you feel today as a positive to move at least a few eggs out of the Facebook basket. Putting all your eggs in one basket is never a good thing, particularly when it is a basket you do not own!

Would you like to Build your own Website or Blog the easy, peasy way?

Greetings.

I just had to tell you about a fantastic course
I have come across!

So, you have this great idea for a website or
an online biz. All you need now is the actual
website. How to do? Where to go?

Someone, somewhere along the way, has led
you to believe that your only choice to get
a rockin’ site that attracts tons of traffic
is to shell out mega bucks to a fancy web
designer.

But there is someone who can you show you
how to make a professional looking site without
knowing any code whatsoever.

This guy knows his stuff when it comes to
WordPress!

Why are web designers charging so much?

It’s because most people falsely believe that
building a website is super complicated and
time-consuming.

WRONG!

Ori now makes a pretty penny building websites
for all sorts of people, and so can we!

I know, I’ve used and done it as a total beginner.

He’s put together the best training on this topic that
I’ve ever seen.

YOU can create high end, high impact, professional
looking websites and/or blogs all by yourself, step
by step.

NEVER again be held hostage by high-priced web
designers who bleed you dry.

This is very impressive stuff indeed!
