Today’s topic is courtesy of  of Driving Traffic. Have you ever wondered how to monetize your blog? Well, don’t! A blog serves many purposes, but making loadsamoney from it really should not be one of them.

Kevin’s article explains more, and provides some ideas on what you should be doing…

How do I monetize my blog? You don’t.

So you have decided to make some extra money online. You followed the steps and got your domain, hosting, CMS, theme, social media, and the list goes on and on. You finally start blogging; only to find out, the money isn’t cascading in. What’s going on here? You’ve been told that millionaires are made everyday online. You were told, “If you build it, they will come”. You have followed all the steps you knew of, and the money just isn’t coming. Don’t fret; every part-time (and full-time) entrepreneur has been there.

Spending your part time blogging isn’t the novel idea it once was. After investing your free time reading, learning, building, and writing, it can be frustrating to not see the results and is easy to get discouraged. The good news is, by attempting to take control of your financial future, you are taking strides to do something most people will never do. If you have made it this far and haven’t seen a dollar yet, I urge you to stick with it. While making boatloads of cash online isn’t as easy as some would lead you to believe, when you do find some success, it makes all of the time and effort all well worth it.

Honest Inventory

Take a critical look at where you are. It is no easy task to be objective when looking at a passion project, but this is an essential part of finding success in your endeavors. Take an outsider’s look at your subject matter, how you write about it, and make an honest assessment. If an outsider looked at your blog what would they say is the biggest issue?

Are you in the right niche, or in a niche at all? This might be the most important thing to consider. If you are in a highly competitive niche, you aren’t doing yourself any favors for someone who is starting out. By picking the correct niche you can save yourself a lot of trouble by having fewer competitors.

Is your site getting traffic? If you are hoping to generate your income from advertising and you do not have a staggering amount of traffic to your site, you need to reconsider your plan of action. There are not many (single) blogs out there that can generate a living wage from advertising revenue alone. So, stop barking up that tree if you are in this position.

This assessment can go on forever, from site design to mobile or social media strategy. I don’t want to you to get hung up here. Unless you are questioning your niche and don’t have traffic, you are ok. If those two things are an issue, you should probably go back to the drawing board and decide on a new domain or direction. Otherwise, if traffic is your only issue, join the club. What you can do in the short term is attempt to stand out from the crowd by producing what you consider being incredibly good content. Be a little more daring, opinionated, or possibly controversial (What do you want to say, but aren’t).

The last short term traffic bump can come from watching the trends. What are other people in your niche talking about? Use tools like blog aggregators (Technorati & alltop), and google alerts. Google alerts are essential for content creators; it is the easiest way to keep your ear to the ground for your topics, without burning your whole day trolling the web. When news is made in your niche, you need to give your two cents, or at least curate someone who is.

Another big pitfall to look out for is focus. My biggest problem starting out was the distribution of my effort. I tended to spend all my free time working 10 different projects. I would spread myself so thin, that none of my projects were up to a standard that I was happy with. Consolidate your efforts. If it comes down to it, pick the project that you have the most fun working on and run with it. Let the others suffer in the mean time. Chances are that if you enjoy it, it will show in the finished product.

Keep in mind the 80/20 rule. I learned this trick from Ryan Deiss, and have seen a consistent trend of successful people who use it. For those of you who are not familiar, it is the concept where you should be spending 80% of your time on what is actually making the bulk of your money. The remaining 20% goes to the other projects. Often 20% of your efforts will generate 80% of your revenue; by identifying that 20% you can save yourself a lot of headaches. There is a lot more to the theory, and I am not really doing it justice here, so look it up if you have never heard it.

Making Money

So, here’s the deal, simply having a blog isn’t going to be your main source of income. You have start thinking about revenue generation. There are a number of ways to achieve that. You can build an authority site, you can focus on lead generation and build a list, but today we are going to talk about products. The most effective way to monetize your blog is to start promoting products; an even more effective way is to promote your own products. This is arguably the most efficient way of generating passive income if done correctly. For many this can be a daunting task. But, it really isn’t as hard as it sounds.

The first step is deciding whether you will be dealing with physical or digital products. There is a separate path for physical products, so today I am just going to focus on digital products. For the part-time entrepreneur I think selling/creating/marketing digital products will be “lower hanging fruit” than physical products. If there is interest, I can write an article on physical goods and drop shipping.

Next is becoming familiar with the products in your space. Get an account with an affiliate platform (clickbank, commission junction, JVZOO, WarriorPlus). Take a look at the marketplace and sort the products for your niche by popularity or gravity. Go through the products to see what is out there, and what seems to be doing well. Make notes of products you like, are interested in, and what their rating/popularity/gravity is (you will use this later).

After having a grasp of what is out there, you can identify “holes” & needs for your niche. Start making plans for potential products. Try and dream something up that is feasible with a unique selling point, something that will set it apart from other products in your space. What would provide real benefit or value to someone with your interests? What would you buy? What do you know that others don’t? What problem do people in your niche experience often? Carl White just wrote an excellent article on how he fulfills the needs of different niches by utilizing facebook and linkedin groups (How to beat the big dogs at affiliate marketing contests).

What I would suggest if you are just starting out is a special report of some kind. You are obviously already familiar with writing, and most likely already have a good grasp on your subject matter.

Find a popular report like this in the market place that is selling well, and buy it. While reading through, make notes of structure, length, format, and the kinds of information covered. You can use this report as a guide when outlining your own product. Something to keep in mind is that on these affiliate-based platforms, the market is typically flooded with “me-too” products. You will need to distance yourself from the collection of similar products on the subject you are writing about. So, if there are already 5 reports out there on the subject you were thinking about and you don’t have anything that drastically sets yours apart from them, you should move on to the next idea.

After you have decided on a product and outlined it, it is time to roll up your sleeves and get to work writing (or building). In the mean time while you develop your product, you can implement other ways of generating revenue like affiliate sales and/or lead generation (list building).

Affiliate Offers

Get the notes you made earlier on products you like in your niche, and their popularity. There are a few things to think about here. If the gravity is really high on the product this is an indication that this product will provide some stiff competition when you attempt to promote it. Do some research on what/who you are competing with. If all of your choices have a lot of competition, you might need to go a little lower on the gravity results and pick something a little less popular.

Once you have decided on a few products you would like to promote. You can start building a plan of action. The easiest way to promote an affiliate offer is adding a banner image to your site linked to your affiliate link. These are often placed in your sidebar in a “text/html widget”. I would also suggest writing a review article on some of the features or sections of the product that you really liked. While you might want to frame this as a product review, keep in mind that you are ultimately writing sales copy. Copy writing is an art form, and can take a lifetime to master. Promoting your product

Once your product is complete, you need to make a marketing plan. The nuances of marketing your product go far beyond what I can cover in this short article but, I will do my best to concisely cover the basics.

You will want to “prime the pump”. This entails dropping hints, and building as much buzz for the product as you can. You can do this with preview posts, social media blasts, and guest posting about the product.

Do your best to write a sales letter or hire someone to write your sales letter, following the outline I linked to above. Hopefully, you have promoted a few affiliate products by now and you have developed a “feel” for what works for your readers and what doesn’t. I would suggest making a dedicated page for your sales letter on your blog and not only making a blog post about it. Make sure your home page is featuring the product in some way (above the fold of the page), whether that is a featured post, banner, or block of content in the side bar. Call in whatever favors you can for promotion via email drops, banners, etc.

Promoting a product can (and will) be an ongoing endeavor, of optimizing, tweaking, rewriting, testing, and tracking. The brevity of this post has been a challenge as each paragraph of this article could be expanded into its own book. Hopefully I was able to illustrate the big picture of monetizing your blog.

Becoming a full time entrepreneur can be a colossal challenge, but with adequate planning and a clear vision you can set yourself up for success. Don’t make a half effort and then give up when you aren’t driving a Bentley a week later. These things can take time and dedication and more than just a blog. As I said earlier in this article, there are countless methods to get you to your goal, and today I covered one. One thing is for certain, stopping after you get your blog built is a mistake.

How to grow your business from 0 to 2.5 mill in revenue… 

As of 2 days ago, MOBE (My Online Business Empire) just crossed 2.5 mil in revenue.

First of all, getting to 2.5 million has not been easy.

When I started out a few years back, I was told that the hardest million is always that first.

When you’re doing this for the first time… you don’t know what you don’t know.

Well, they weren’t lying.

And it’s important that you understand that on YOUR quest to build a big online business, you’re going to make a ton of mistakes.

And, how fast you get to the first million, will be directly proportional to your willingness to make mistakes, make a fool of yourself, and go into situations where you may not be that comfortable – but you do it anyway.

Eg. the first event I ever hosted (which I did in early 2012) was like jumping into the deep end of the swimming pool, not knowing how to swim.

It was completely outside of my comfort zone.

But I learned how to put on events through ‘doing’ – not theory.  It’s the doing part where you learn your real lessons.

Most importantly, the idea of the ‘self made entrepreneur’ is B.S. 

When I started out, I thought I’d be able to do it all on my own… but I soon realised I couldn’t.

No one builds a big company on their own.

It’s always a team effort. 

For me, my most important team members are the people in my MOBE License Rights Program. 

There’s about 750 of them so far, and, we are growing fast.

The 3 Most Common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes

Affiliate marketing is one of the most effective and powerful ways of earning money online. It provides anyone at all with the opportunity to make a profit through the Internet. Since these affiliate marketing programs are easy to join, implement and pay regular commissions, more and more people are now getting in on the act.

However, like all businesses, there are lots of pitfalls in the affiliate marketing business for the unsuspecting newbie. Committing some of the most common mistakes could cost dearly. That’s why it’s better to avoid them from the beginning, rather than regret them in the end.

Mistake number 1: Choosing the wrong affiliate program.

Many people want to earn from affiliate marketing as fast as possible. In their rush to be part of a program, they tend to choose a bandwagon product. This is the kind of product that the marketer thinks is “hot”. They choose the product that is in demand without actually considering
whether the product actually appeals to them. This is clearly not a very wise move.

Instead of jumping on the bandwagon, try to choose a product in which you are truly interested. For any endeavour to succeed, you should take some time to plan and figure out your actions, and find out what you are, and are not, interested in.

Pick a product that appeals to you. Then do some research about that product to see if it is in demand. Promoting a product you are more passionate about is easier than promoting one for the sake of the earnings only.

Mistake number 2: Joining too many affiliate programs.

Since affiliate programs are very easy to join, you might be tempted to join loads of programs to try and maximize the earnings you will be making.

Many programs may well be a great way to have multiple sources of income, but joining multiple programs (and attempting to promote them all at the same time) will prevent you from concentrating on any one of them.

The result? The maximum potential of your affiliate programs will not be realized and the income generated will be disappointing. The best way to get excellent result is by joining just one program that pays at least a
40% commission. Then give it your best effort by promoting that product enthusiastically. As soon as you see that it is making a reasonable profit, you can then join, set up and promote another program.

The technique is to do it slowly but surely. There is really no need to rush into things, especially with affiliate marketing. With the way things are going, the future is looking really bright and it seems that affiliate marketing is here to stay.

Mistake number 3: Not buying the product or using the service yourself.

As an affiliate, your main purpose is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service and to find customers for it. For you to achieve this purpose, you must be able to relay your satisfaction to the potential customers of that certain product and service. It would therefore be difficult for you to do this when you yourself have not tried them out. Thus, you will fail to promote and recommend them convincingly and you will also fail to create the desire in your customers to own the product.

Try the product or service personally first before you sign up as an affiliate in order to see if it is really delivering what it promises. If you do this you are then a credible user, aware of its advantages and any potential disadvantages. Your marketing will then convey sincerity
and trust in you which will encourage your audience to try it out for themselves.

Many affiliate marketers make these 3 mistakes and are paying dearly for their actions. Do not be one of them!

Time is the key. Take the time to analyse your marketing strategy and check to make sure you’re on the right track. If done properly, you will be able to maximize your affiliate marketing programs and earn higher profits.

No SEO? Apply, and Be Patient!

If you’re anything like I used to be, you try out one of those search engine optimization  methods as postulated by those apparently in the know, then you go straight over to Google to see whether it’s worked!  Well I now know that with search engine optimization, patience is the name of the game.

Imagine the internet as a huge supermarket with virtually hundreds – perhaps even thousands – of products and services to offer for just one keyword alone. Sites, in their early stages of establishment, will not fare well with others who have been around for, let’s say seven years or so.

The strength of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can then aid these beginner websites in getting a higher position in search engine results. However, it takes time for SEO to show positive results, and potential clients would be better served if they knew and understood the factors that affect the SEO timeframe.

Keywords

These are the words used to initiate a search. Of course, more websites will try to rank for a keyword closely related to their content. The level of competition for a certain keyword affects the length of time for the optimization to take effect. If there are already a lot of websites ranking for a particular keyword, it is likely that new websites will rank low against old and more established ones.

Number of inbound links

Also known as backlinks, these can play a great role in increasing a website’s link popularity, thus securing a decently high rank for a certain keyword. Take this scenario as an example:

You have a new website, and you want it to rank high in search engine results. Start by looking for sites that have existed for five years or more, or sites that rank within the Top 100. Once you have several such websites, you can write guest blog posts with the permission of the website owner or administrator. That blog post should include a link or URL to your new website.

So, when a visitor enters those sites, sees the post that you have made and clicks on the link, you earn one page view. Now imagine that 1 view multiplied by hundreds, even thousands of visitors! Your website popularity and subsequent page ranking increase in the process.

Many say that the “Google slaps” of late have made backlinking far less effective than it was, but there is no doubt that when done properly they do still work well.

Content

In order for a website to rank high in the search results, the content must be fresh and updated regularly. Remember that search engines are still programs; they detect quantity rather than quality. You may have some great content on your site, but if the website itself is not updated, then your site will suffer.

Online presence

Strategies such as blog updates, e-newsletters, article syndication, and online press releases are just some of the strategies that build up a website’s presence on the internet. Search engines tend to detect a website that has established a strong online presence.

Age of the website

Believe it or not, the age of the website is also a factor for ranking. A site that has been around for more than a year and has a lot of content can be considered as having an established presence. It is then easy for search engines to rank that particular site in its results.

On the average, it can take three to six months for SEO strategies to obtain a desirable result. So, give SEO the time to work its wonders, and see the good results for yourself.

There Is No Time Like the Present to Create Your Future

Are You Integrated with Google Direct Connect?

It really is a good idea for you to get integrated with Google Direct Connect.

Google Direct Connect is a brand new feature in Google search that brings your customers straight to you. It’s an easy way for them to find your Google Plus Page and not a bunch of junk sites that just mention your brand name.

Google Plus Pages are like Facebook fan pages for Google Plus. Google Plus is the big, new social media site and most folks are still on the fence about it. Smart folks, however, have jumped straight off that fence and are signed up because who knows, it may be huge. After all, it’s Google’s social media site and it plans to give Facebook a run for its money.

Searching with Google Direct Connect

Like the name suggests, Google Direct Connect connects people directly to your Google Plus Page. They type in ‘+’ and then the name of your brand, and it takes them straight to your Google Plus Page, no fuss and no bother.

This new feature is really new. It doesn’t work with all pages yet. But what it effectively does is puts your profile on Google Plus at the very top of the search results. The link and description for your site appear right below the search box. Local businesses couldn’t ask for anything better from the search engine giant.

The only trouble with Google Direct Connect is that at the time of this writing, it’s not available for everybody. You have to meet The Big G’s standards of worthiness. What does it take to get connected?

 You have to have a link from your Google Plus Page to your website and vice versa.
 You’ve got to have a Google Plus button on your website.
 And you have to meet some vague standards that Google mentions on its website about relevance and popularity. What this means is probably that your site has to be established and getting some traffic already.

The long and short of it is that in order to appear at the very top for Google Direct Connect searches, all you need to do is advertise Google Plus. That’s some smart marketing!

But another purpose of the verification is to make sure that it’s your brand’s official page that shows up and not an impostor’s. Although Google Plus isn’t too bad (yet), other social media sites like Facebook are rife with imitators. A fake page pretending to be you could actually beat you in search results.

Google Direct Connect is just the latest move to integrate everything with the King of Search Engines, and it offers some great advantages for your business. If you haven’t already gotten into Google Plus, now might be a good time to create your profile and start building a stronger relationship with the search engine giant.

Can Facebook Advertising Work For You?

Have you ever wondered whether or not to advertise on Facebook?  Quite apart from catching up with family and friends, Facebook advertising can be a cost effective way to pull in lots of traffic… if you’re in the right niche.

When you’re on Facebook, you’ve probably noticed the ads that appear on the side of the page. These are Facebook Ads and they’re paid ads from Facebook users. This is an advertising method that lots of people use to get traffic, fans, Likes and sales, and it can work for you too.

Why Facebook Ads Are So Effective

The really great thing about Facebook Ads is that they let you choose a highly targeted demographic. You can choose who sees the ad by age, gender, interests, location, education level, income level, and absolutely anything else people put on their profiles. This is huge – it’s way more targeted than either Google AdWords or Yahoo Ads, plus you get walked through the entire process.

Another advantage over those advertising methods is that your Facebook Ad comes with an image. It can be your logo, something eye-catching, or just a smiling face. This makes your ads much more visually appealing and they’re more likely to stand out.

Facebook Ads are very useful when you want to get a quick burst of traffic. For example, if you’ve just started a fan page and you’d like to get some activity going there, Facebook Ads can get you fans fast. You can set your own daily advertising limit and, once your page is up and running, you can then cancel the ad campaign.

Some factors to considder:

Before you sign up for your Facebook Ads campaign (and more importantly, fork over the money), there are a few things you should consider.

First of all, certain niches perform better with Facebook Ads than others. Some are hot and some are not. The gaming, tech, and dating niches are all huge on Facebook, while health niches generally don’t do so well. Don’t take it for granted that just because your niche is big, it’ll also be big on Facebook.

To make your ads work, you need to be able to write compelling copy. Social media is a bit different than direct mail or other types of copywriting. In general, people aren’t on Facebook to buy. They’re there to hang out, connect with others, and be entertained. Your ad has to appeal to this audience. You can learn how to write good copy by looking at popular ads to get ideas.

You also have to make sure that they’re going to like what they see after they click the link and come to your page. In other words, the ad should be relevant and target the right people, and your page’s content has to deliver what it promises.

Before You Get Started…

Before you start your Facebook Ads campaign, make sure that you have a clear objective for it in mind. What do you want people to do when they hit your fan page? If you have this clear in your mind and focus your efforts on it, your Facebook Ads will achieve their objective and pay off big-time.

10 Words Every Successful Blogger Needs to Know

Whether you are blogging for profit, publicity, or pleasure, the basic building blocks of success are the same.

Success can be defined as, “accomplishing an aim or purpose or having achieved popularity, profit, or distinction.” (Google Dictionary)

Here are ten essential words you should consider constantly as a blogger, as they reflect the values you need in order to succeed.

1. Purpose

A purpose is “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.” (Google Dictionary)

So why do you blog or want to start a blog? Your motive should determine the style of your blog, your style of writing, the frequency of your posts, and the subject matter of your posts. It’s important that you establish your purpose from the outset and make sure that your design and content fit that purpose.

The theme, layout, amount of advertising and type of content will all flow from your purpose, and they’ll set the tone that you desire. That doesn’t mean that you need to take it all too seriously if you are blogging just for fun, but it does mean that you shouldn’t dominate your pages with ads if your aim isn’t to make money blogging.

If you are operating in a niche, your purpose will be fairly clear and your content sharply focused. If, however, like me, you started to blog without any firm aims, then you might find that you need to be more flexible and allow your purpose to evolve and mature.

I started out aiming to collate Top 10 posts on all sorts of subjects, but now I focus on social media, especially blogging and Twitter. You don’t need to be too rigid—follow your instincts and go with the flow if you feel that could be the best way for you to discover your purpose.

2. Quality

Quality is “the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something.” (Google Dictionary)

Good-quality content is the foundation of all great blogs. That’s easy to say, but how do you measure quality, and how do you ensure that your content achieves the desired standard?

That is a very subjective question but I would say that a post should be able to inform, educate, amuse, or entertain. Any one of these is a basic requirement, more than one is desirable, and all four is blogging heaven!

Your content should be original—too often we can visit a blog which appears to have some killer content but which, on closer examination, is a copy of or an excerpt from something previously posted elsewhere.

Don’t just focus on content quality, but on presentation quality too. Poor spelling and grammar can ruin the best posts. Always check and proofread your content to make sure it’s as good as possible. Be proud of what you do and make sure it embodies the best quality in all respects.

3. Patience

Patience is “an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay.” (Dictionary.com)

This is essential in blogging! It can take some considerable time for your blog to be noticed, or for changes you have made to show results. Sometimes you can make changes such as SEO improvements, new sharing options, or different ad types and become frustrated when you don’t see results overnight.

It takes time for changes to take effect, particularly with search engine results and rankings, so be prepared to let things run for a while before you judge the results.

Too many changes in a short space of time can annoy regular visitors too, so try to be a tortoise and not a hare: allow good time to see the benefits of all the positive changes you make to your blog.

4. Determination

Determination is “a resolute movement towards some object or end.” (Dictionary.com)

Surely you don’t need to be determined to run a blog? Well, if you are trying to make money from your blog, or are using it as part of your social media strategy for a business, you most certainly do. It needs to be kept up to date and monitored to see how it’s performing, and that takes time and commitment.

But even if you are blogging just for the fun of it, you still need to be determined to keep it going in the long run. There are so many distractions in “real” life. I know from my own experience that sometimes blogging can seem to be a bit of a chore, and the blog can take a back seat as life takes over.

But you need to be determined to log in again to start writing and constructing that next post, as a neglected blog will soon begin to whither on the vine.

5. Confidence

Confidence is “belief in oneself and one’s powers or abilities.” (Dictionary.com)

Self-confidence is a quality that is generally required to succeed in all areas of life—and blogging is no different. Just to put yourself out there in the first place takes courage and self-belief, and even the most experienced blogger may sometimes feel self doubt as their finger hovers over the Publish button.

Every blogger starts from the same place, and the key to building that confidence is, in the first place, to take that initial step to get started, and then to learn and develop from there.

You may not consider yourself to be the best writer or very technically minded, but by looking at what other bloggers do, soaking up the best of the amazing resources that are out there, and trying out new things to stretch yourself, your confidence will grow.

However, you must be prepared to fail and to learn from the inevitable mistakes that you will make. The blogger who hasn’t made a mistake yet may feel confident, but that confidence may be misplaced and will lead to an almighty fall when disaster strikes.

A better way to develop as a confident blogger is to take risks, be prepared to fail, and learn from the experience when it happens.

6. Integrity

Integrity is “adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.” (Dictionary.com)

I like a blog post with a bit of spice in it as much as the next person, but as bloggers we need to know where the boundaries, both moral and ethical, lie—and to act accordingly. What is considered to be offensive material is in many ways “in the eye of the beholder,” however the blogger should be wary of springing surprises on their readers.

For instance, a visitor to an erotic literature review site might know what to expect but if they come across explicit material on a web design blog they might be somewhat surprised. Similarly I see bloggers use offensive language and get away with it, but most would agree that it needs to be used sparingly and in the right context to be acceptable.

Do you have adverts or affiliate links on your blog? If so do you make it clear that you might be earning from these and do you ensure that you are not advertising products and services that most of your readers wouldn’t approve of? To preserve our reputation as bloggers it’s vital to make sure you make the appropriate disclosures and to ensure that you are happy with your ads and promotions.

We all hate to see our work copied elsewhere or images used without permission, so don’t do it to others. Again, we should all try to maintain good standards and do something about plagiarism when it does happen.

We all, as bloggers, have a responsibility to act with integrity and honesty to maintain our reputations. If we don’t, then we are unlikely to be successful.

7. Communication

The definition of communication is “to give or interchange thoughts, feelings, information.” (Dictionary.com)

This is one of the most important words for a blogger. Sharing, networking, commenting, reacting to comments, and connecting and interacting with others are vital ingredients of the blogging experience.

There are two aspects to this. The first relates to your own blog and the second to your own actions. A successful blogger must make sure that it’s easy for their readers to comment on and to share their posts. There is endless (often conflicting) advice out there about the best way to achieve this, so do your research, experiment, and find out what works best for you.

Get out there into the big, wide online world too. Connect with others on whichever platforms work for you. But don’t just use this as a way to make yourself known—promote other people too. Share great content from other bloggers, comment on their work, and interact with them. Doing that well not only means that you have a better chance of blogging success, but that your experience will be enriched, and b,logging will just be more fun.

8. Personality

Character is “the essential character of a person.” (Dictionary.com)

A great quality of any successful blogger is that they allow their personality to shine through all that they do. Don’t hide behind a logo—take a peek out and show your face.

Tell the world a little about yourself and add your image to your About page, and people will relate to you as a real person rather than as a corporate or anonymous entity. Let your own personality show in your writing and the things you write about.

People relate to real people, so showing your personality to the world will be of benefit when you do get out and about connecting and interacting on your chosen social (and real-world) networks.

9. Consistency

Consistency refers to the “steadfast adherence to the same principles, course, form, etc.” (Dictionary.com)

In my early blogging days, I tended to make quite a few changes to the design and format of my blog as I found my feet and decided what worked best for me. I progressed from a Blogger blog to a free WordPress theme, and then through two premium themes until I finally settled on my blog’s present layout.

My guess would be that it didn’t matter too much initially, as I had very few visitors, but it’s important, as your blog grows, to create consistency so that your readers are comfortable visiting your place and know, to a degree, what to expect from you.

I’m not just talking about consistency in design and layout, but also consistency in content and post frequency. You don’t need to be posting all hours of the day, but try to achieve a consistent style and frequency of posts so that people get used to seeing you around.

Consistency of topic is a little harder but still very important if you are blogging in a niche. I have always had posts on all sorts of subjects, from blogging and social media to chess and Halloween games, so readers are used to that. However if you blog about cookery, for instance, and suddenly a post on car maintenance appears, your readers might wonder what you are up to.

10. Flexibility

Flexibility is “characterized by a ready capability to adapt to new, different, or changing requirements.” (Merriam-Webster.com)

Since I just sung the praises of being consistent and patient, flexibility may seem a strange word to include, however the ability to be flexible is vital for the successful blogger. It’s all about recognising when something isn’t working and having the courage to make changes to try to improve what you are doing to meet your aims.

The social media world is changing and developing around your blog, so you need to be willing to be flexible—prepared, for example, to make changes to your sharing options, or to integrate a new development that would benefit you and your readers.

The key, though, is to try to maintain that consistency by not making too many changes at once, and being patient enough to allow the changes to take effect. Those three key words of flexibility, consistency and patience are most definitely interlinked. You need to keep them all in mind.

3 Ways a Facebook Fan page can Increase Your Popularity

In these social media savvy times, it is important that online marketers are actually visible online!  One very effective way of ensuring this is to set up and/or enhance your Facebook fan page or pages.

I will be sharing a few tips on how to do this effectively in my next few blog posts, starting with this one:-

If you are responsible for marketing your business, then you absolutely must extend your efforts into the world of social media.  And if you are marketing through social media, you absolutely must create a Facebook fan page.  Facebook fan pages are different from regular member profile pages in a number of ways, and are the perfect way to increase awareness about your business and its offerings.  If you are still on the fence about Facebook and what it can do for your business, then you owe the fan page interface some serious consideration.  Here are three ways in which a Facebook fan page can increase your popularity:

Friends list limitations versus likes.  Facebook profile pages allow for only five thousand friends.  When you do get friend requests, you have to take the time to either approve or deny them.  Now, five thousand may sound like a lot of friends, but not when you are a business competing with businesses that have hundreds of thousands of customers and counting.  When you convert to a Facebook fan page, your “friends list” changes in a couple of ways: first off, the five thousand limit is lifted, and second off, you no longer have to approve new friends.  People simply hit the “like” button at the top of your page and they are automatically subscribed . . . which means everyone on their friends lists sees this activity in the news feed.

Advertisements.  Once you have a business fan page set up, you can take advantage of Facebook advertisements.  Facebook allows you to customize your ads to target whichever audience you choose.  Facebook ads are proven to be highly effective, and can be a great tool in your bag of marketing tricks.

Customized applications.  One awesome thing you can do with a Facebook fan page is create custom apps (or hire an app developer to do so) that allow your page visitors to perform a multitude of tasks right from the Facebook interface.  The options include selling your products directly from your fan page, and allowing page visitors to opt in to other offers linked to your business.  When you employ the use of apps, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
